Descendientes De J. Palacios Petalos Del Bierzo 2022

750ml

93 points, Robert Parker

The 2022 Pétalos was produced with 85% Mencía, 10% white grapes and 5% other reds from over 90 hectares, 20% owned by them and the rest from 180 families. It fermented with some full clusters in oak and stainless steel vats and matured in barrels of different sizes for 10 months. It's clearly more Mediterranean, with notes of rockrose and other aromatic herbs, juicy and round, more fruit-driven, aromatic, velvety and very pleasant and easy to drink. It has 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.54. It's still not all bottled, as it's done in different lots, for a total of around 270,000 bottles and 3,000 magnums.

Tasting Profile

  • Body: Medium to Full-bodied
  • Tannins: Medium. The tannins are described as juicy, fresh, and with a slight crunch. They provide structure to the wine without being overpowering, allowing the fruit flavors to shine.
  • Acidity: Medium. A lively acidity that keeps the wine balanced and energetic. This acidity cuts through the richness of the fruit and helps the wine linger on the finish.
  • Sweetness: Dry. Alvaro Palacios Camins Del Priorat 2021 is a dry wine with no perceivable sweetness.

Tasting Notes: On the nose, expect a vibrant and youthful explosion of red fruits like cherries and pomegranate. Hints of potpourri add a touch of floral complexity, while oyster shell minerality and coffee notes add depth. The palate reflects the nose, offering a continuation of red fruits with additional nuances of marjoram, violet, and white pepper. The wine is described as elegant and expressive, with a touch of smokiness and a spicy mineral streak lingering on the finish.

Discover the Winery: Descendientes De J. Palacios

In northwest Spain's Bierzo region, Descendientes de J. Palacios is a renowned winery specializing in red wines made from the Mencia grape. Founded by Alvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Perez Palacios in 1998, this family-owned business has elevated Bierzo's status in the wine industry, both nationally and internationally. With vineyards spanning 27 hectares, the winery's old grapevines thrive in the hilly terrain, benefiting from a Continental climate influenced by the nearby Mediterranean Sea. The vineyards are spread across 200 separate plots in communities like Valtuille, Parandones, and Villafranca. Through environmentally friendly viticulture practices, Alvaro and Ricardo cultivate their grapevines organically and with biodynamic techniques, avoiding the use of chemicals. The resulting wines are exceptional, reflecting the region's unique terroir. Descendientes de J. Palacios has even been honored with Robert Parker's green emblem for its commitment to long-term environmental protection and biodiversity.
