Located in Bernkastel-Kues alongside the Mosel River, Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Thanisch is a renowned winery with a fascinating lineage. Founded in 1636, the winery gained international recognition in the late 19th Century under the stewardship of Dr. Hugo Thanisch. Tragically, Dr. Thanisch passed away in 1895, and his widow, Katharina, took over the management of the estate. Since then, the winery has carried the name "Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch" (Wwe. being the German abbreviation for "Witwe," meaning widow).

Today, the 11th-generation family member, Sofia Thanisch, leads the winery, with her daughters Christina and Juliane poised to continue the family tradition. With vineyard parcels in Zeltingen, Wehlen, Graach, and Bernkastel, including the esteemed southwest-facing Grand Cru Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard, the winery cultivates a modest nine hectares.
