100 points, James Suckling's #1 Wine of 2023

This is really something. Electric on the palate. The aromas are so complex with sliced fresh and dried ginger, subtle pie crust, tarte tatin and hints of nutmeg with some salted caramel. Toasted bread, too. Always subtle. The palate is full- to medium-bodied yet hemmed-in with a freshness and balance that draws you back. Savory and vibrant. It's full of energy. Spectacular. Fascinating. Symphonic blend of 2012, 2008 and 2007. 65% of the 2012, 25% of the 2008 and 10% of the 2007. Eight grand cru. Chardonnay 58% and 42% pinot noir. Disgorged February 2023. 10 years on the lees. 7g/L dosage

Tasting Profile

  • Body: Full-bodied, showcasing a rich and expansive texture that coats the palate with elegance and depth.
  • Tannins: Grand Siècle Itération N°26 possesses a subtle structural grip. This manifests as a refined minerality and a sense of underlying firmness rather than aggressive tannins, contributing to its age-worthiness and complexity.
  • Acidity: High and vibrant, a hallmark of the Laurent-Perrier style and particularly pronounced in this iteration due to the inclusion of the cooler 2008 vintage. The acidity is beautifully integrated, providing exceptional freshness, lift, and a mouthwatering quality that balances the wine's richness and ensures a long, clean finish.
  • Sweetness:Brut. This Champagne is decidedly dry, with minimal residual sugar. The focus is on the purity of the fruit, the complex autolytic notes, and the refreshing acidity, resulting in a sophisticated and savory profile.

Tasting Notes: A white gold in color with delicate and persistent bubbles, it offers a very complex nose which mixes honeysuckle, lemon, clementine and fresh butter aromas, followed by notes of hazelnut and a touch of honey. The feel in the mouth is very delicate and fresh with candied lemon and fresh hazelnut aromas. The palate is silky and mineral with notes of honeysuckle, flaked almonds and clementine.

Discover the Winery: Laurent Perrier

Although originally founded in 1812, the name Champagne Laurent-Perrier was not conceived until 1964. It was Bernard de Nonancourt who initiated Laurent-Perrier's rise to world fame. One of Champagne's most important figures in the 20th century, he officially took over in 1948 after a three-year apprenticeship at the Houses of Delamotte and Lanson. In his 62-year tenure, production grew from 80,000 bottles annually to over eight million. Under de Nonancourt, Laurent-Perrier were the first House to use stainless-steel vats and the first House to create both a zero dosage champagne (Ultra Brut) and a multi-vintage prestige cuvée (Grand Siècle). Sadly, de Nonancourt passed away in 2010 and Laurent-Perrier is now managed by his two daughters, Alexandra and Stéphanie alongside Cellar Master Michel Fauconnet and has become one of the region's largest producers, they are perhaps best known for Cuvée Rosé, the most recognised rosé champagne on the planet. Since 2020 Alexandra's daughter, Lucie Pereyre de Nonancourt has taken on the global role of Brand Ambassador for Grand Siècle.
